You can see there are four sheets of red paper. 3 are rectangle 1 is square. We write the Chinese characters in black or golden ink on the red paper, these two long sheets of red paper are called vertical scrolls美 /skrol/. They are a pair of poetry lines. The two lines should have an equal number of characters and similar meanings.</p><p class="ql-block"> </p><p class="ql-block">Here I have a question, do you know which one is upper scroll, and which one is the lower scroll?</p><p class="ql-block"> </p><p class="ql-block"><b>Mom:</b> The audience can raise the hand to answer it.</p><p class="ql-block"> </p><p class="ql-block"><b>Jeff:</b> Right, we judge it by the tone of the last character. The third or forth tone is the upper scroll, the first or second tone is the lower scroll. </p><p class="ql-block"> </p><p class="ql-block">And why do we use red paper?</p><p class="ql-block">Because we Chinese believe the red color can drive away the evils and bring good luck.</p><p class="ql-block"> </p><p class="ql-block">We shall paste / put up them on both sides of the front door.</p><p class="ql-block"> </p><p class="ql-block">Then we have a shorter scroll which is called horizontal scroll, it has four characters, we paste it above the door .</p><p class="ql-block"> </p><p class="ql-block"><b>Mom:</b> Thank you, Mr. Jeff, how about this square sheet? I’m Vincy. </p><p class="ql-block">My favorite food is <b>dumpling</b>. </p><p class="ql-block">Dumpling is a traditional Chinese food with a long history. </p><p class="ql-block">Today I will show you how to make dumplings.
