They grow and make new plans. When they get old, they die. This is called a life cycle.

A new seed needs water, oxygen and warmth to start to grow into a plant.

The plant grows bigger and produces leaves

Then the plant produces flowers. The flower has male and female parts. The female part of the flower has eggs. The male part of the flower makes pollen.

To make new seeds, the pollen from one flower has to get to the eggs of another flower. The plant needs the wind or insects like bees ,to help. This is called pollination.

The pollen and the eggs join together and make seeds that grow inside a fruit. Some plants die after this, but other plants grow and make new things for many years.

The seeds can't grow if they are too near each other. Animals or the wind take some of the fruit away from the plant. This gives the seeds more space so that they can grow.

What Do Different Plant Parts Do?

Trees have different parts that serve their own special functions.

Crown

The crown consists of the leaves and branches at the top of a tree. It grows like a hat to expose more under sunlight.

Foliage

The leafy part of the tree is called a foliage ,which generates sugar and other energy .

Leaves are made to catch the sunlight as plants need sunlight to make food, the process of plants making food is called photosynthesis.

Plants take carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen back into the environment.

Twig

The twigs produce the majority of flowers and fruits.

Trunk

They act like the plant's plumbing /?pl?m??/ system管道系統(tǒng), conducting water and nutrients from the roots and food in the form of glucose from the leaves to other plant parts.Water and minerals from the roots are carried up through the trunk. They can deliver sugar and other energy downward generated by leaves. Deliver water and minerals upward absorbed by water roots.

Roots

Roots can hold the plant in the soil .

Roots soak up water and minerals from the soil.

Roots grow downward to make the tree steadier.

Annual rings

Annual rings can tell us the age of a tree ,as well as what it has experienced during the years It is alive .Every year as the tree grows, new layer of the rings are formed. Guess how old is the tree below?

Each pair of light and dark rings adds up to 1 year of growth for the tree. Here is a quick step-by-step guide to planting your new tree.

1)Dig a large hole where you want the tree to go. Make sure the hole is at least two times as wide as the root ball and deep enough for the root ball to fit so the top is slightly above with the surrounding ground.

2)Carefully position the tree in the hole. Be sure that tree is facing the direction that you want it to and remove any ties結(jié) or burlap /?b??l?p/ 麻袋 that came attached to the tree root.

3)Fill in the remaining space. Add loose soil and organic matter (optional) to the space leftover. Try not to add too much to one side, forcing the tree to tilt in one direction. You want it to grow straight and tall.

4)Attach the tree to a stake. Stick a stake into the ground and through the root ball. Then attach it loosely to the trunk of the new tree.A stake is a pointed wooden post which is pushed into the ground, for example in order to support a young tree. 樁I don't think our rose saple needs a stake.

5)Water, water, water. Mature /m??tj??, -?t???/ trees need a good watering about every month. If there is extreme heat, then water more often.

3)Make sure the tree is getting adequate /??d?kw?t/ 足夠的 water, but do not overdo it either. If the soil is dry and crumbly易碎的, then more water is needed. If the soil is soggy, then that tree is getting too much water, which can block oxygen and eventually kill the roots.

4)Check leaves for signs of drought: wilting, curling, yellowing, or browning.

/w?lt/ If a plant wilts, it gradually bends downward and becomes weak because it needs more water or is dying. 枯萎

5)Clear any weeds or grass around the base of the tree. Other plants steal valuable resources from the tree.

6)Do not use pesticides or herbicides/?h??b??sa?d/ 除草劑 on young trees. If you decide to use a terra cotta[?t?r? ?kɑt?]陶土 pot for repotting, make sure you soak the pot in water for a few hours before you begin the repotting process. Terra cotta is pretty porous[?p?:r?s]能滲透的, which means it soaks up 吸收water easily.
