Supplementary<br>(1) What Is a Food Chain?</b><br>A food chain is a linear depiction of who eats who within an ecosystem. Animals eat to get energy to live, so a food chain shows how energy moves throughout an ecosystem/?i?ko?s?st?m/生態(tài)系統(tǒng).<br> Organisms can be divided into two categories: producers and consumers. Producers are capable of making their own food, like plants and grasses. They use water and energy from the sun through the process of photosynthesis/?fo?to??s?nθ?s?s/光合作用 to make their own food (in the form of sugar) and grow. Consumers are organisms that cannot make their own energy; they have to eat other organisms to survive. <b>Producers</b><br>Most food chains begin with producers, such as plants, grass and flowers. This is because all plants can produce their own food using water, sunlight, soil and other nutrients through photosynthesis. <b>Consumers</b><br>There are four different kinds of consumers. <br>?<b>A herbivore</b> is an animal that eats only plants. <br>?<b>An omnivore</b> is an animal that eats both plants and animals. <br>?<b>A carnivore</b> is an animal that eats other animals. ?<b>A scavenger /?sk?v?nd??r/--decomposer</b>食腐動(dòng)物 is an animal that eats dead animals. <b>(2) Grassland Food Chain</b> A grassland is an area of land that is dominated by grasses; less than 10% of the area is covered by trees or shrubs, and usually these are only found along waterways. <br><b>Producers</b><br>Living things that make their own food are called producers. These include different types of plants, trees, grasses and shrubs. In the grasslands, grass is the producer that is most plentiful. Food chains always begin with the sun, because that is the energy source that plants use to make their own food. This makes the sun the most important component of a food chain!<br><b>Consumers</b><br>Animals that eat other living things for survival are known as consumers. However, there are different types of consumers based on what they eat. Primary consumers are animals that feed on producers, or plants. In the African grasslands some well-known primary consumers include elephants and zebras.<br>Secondary consumers are animals that eat the elephants and zebras, including hyenas and cheetahs. <br>The scavengers eat the corpses of the hyena and cheetah and include vultures and termites. Finally, the decomposers or detrivores eat the droppings of the scavengers.<div><b>(3) Pond food chain</b><br></div> <b>Producer Level:</b> The producer level of a pond's food web collectively includes the many species of floating and rooted aquatic plant life that absorb items such as sunlight, water, air and soil minerals.<br><b>Primary consumers:</b> The primary consumers in a pond's food web consist of tiny herbivorous animals that feed on algae and other aquatic plants to sustain themselves. These animals include insects, tadpoles, very small fish and snails.<br><b>Secondary Consumers:</b> They eat the primary consumers. This second level of animal consumers includes many species of fish, frogs, other amphibians, crayfish and reptiles such as turtles and water snakes.<br>Tertiary Consumers: This third level of animal consumer includes fish- and frog-eating water birds, fish-eating hawks, numerous small mammals and human beings. Sometimes human beings and predator birds are classified as top consumers rather than tertiary consumers.<br><b>Decomposers: </b>Bacteria, fungi and insect/animal scavengers complete the pond's food web, breaking down dead and decaying aquatic plants and animals, releasing their elemental nutrients. The recycling of nutrients by decomposers make the nutrients available to new generations of plants that are eaten by tiny animals, which are eaten by larger animals, which are eaten by the largest animals.<div><b>(4) Ocean food chain</b><br></div> <b>Producers and Consumers</b><br>Examples of producers in the ocean are algae, seaweed and plankton. <br>Consumers are organisms that receive their energy by eating other consumers and producers. Examples of consumers are crabs, shrimp, dolphins, sharks and fish.
