It is named for the Menghou Yuan, Fengyuan and White Deer Yuan within the territory. Sanyuan is the place of the ancient capital city. It has a history of more than 1560 years since it was set up in the seventh year of Taipingzhen Lord of the Northern Wei Dynasty (446 AD). It is known as "the capital, the mouth of hundreds of millions of people". The county covers an area of 576.9 square kilometers, with an arable land area of 537,000 mu. It has jurisdiction over 172 administrative villages, 9 towns and 4 centers, with a registered population of 417,600 (in 2016).</p><p class="ql-block">Sanyuan is located in the arc center of Xi 'an, Xianyang, Weinan, Tongchuan and other surrounding large and medium-sized cities. It is connected to Lintong, Fuping and Yanliang in the east, Gaoling in the south, Jingyang and Chunhua in the west, Tongxin New District and Yaozhou District in the north. It is the economic hinterland of the construction of "One Line and Two Belts" in Shaanxi Guanzhong and the north gate of the provincial capital Xi 'an. Sanyuan is 30 kilometers away from Xi 'an and 20 kilometers away from Xianyang International Airport, with Xiantong Railway running from east to west, Yanxi Expressway (G65W) and Xitong Expressway (G65) running from north to south, 210 National Highway, 208 Provincial Highway and 107 Central Ring Road crisscrossing each other. With superior development location, Sanyuan enjoys convenient transportation. The planned intercity railway from Yanliang to Xianyang airport passes through the southern part of the county.Sanyuan is one of the eight "satellite new towns" constructed by Xi Xian International Metropolis. The planned area of the county seat is 30 square kilometers, and the built-up area is 15 square kilometers.
